Arabesque 2: Graphic Design from the Arab World and Persia
To celebrate the release of Arabesque 2: Graphic Design from the Arab World and Persia, we are proud to host a book presentation and talk on Thursday, September 22 at 7pm at Gestalten Space.
Editors Ben Wittner and Sascha Thoma from design studio eps51 will give an introduction to the current state of design in the Middle East and highlight innovative and groundbreaking graphic design, illustration, typography, and street art by young designers and activists that is emblematic of the cultural emancipation of the region. Renowned Iranian graphic designer and typographer Reza Abedini will also join us to give a short presentation of his diverse award-winning graphic design work that has been highly influential in making an impact on communicating Iran's visual heritage internationally.
This will be followed by a mix of traditional and contemporary Arabic music and drinks!
Arabesque 2 is a collection of recent cutting-edge work by young designers and activists from the Arab world and Iran. The examples of typography, graphic design, logos, editorial design, and illustration presented here chart a compelling course between local visual convention and a modern international style that is emblematic of the increasing cultural emancipation of the entire Middle East. The book’s rich selection of groundbreaking visuals is supplemented by texts and interviews that describe the environments in which the featured designers and artists work. Arabesque 2 also includes a preface by John Martin, co-founder of Art Dubai, and a CD-ROM with 4 typefaces related to its themes.
