Berkeley-based artist extraordinaire Brendan Monroe's paintings, sculptures, illustrations and toys are increasingly causing a stir. While his vegetable-heavy motifs debauch the conclusion that his art is somehow organic, a quote from the web sums it up best - "Saying Brendan Monroe's art is organic is like saying Dr. Suess really liked illustrating children's books."
We totally agree, since his work bears a psychotic tension and existentialist strength that offers unequaled opportunities.
Like a decent farmer Brendan is more humble and calm than ego-driven and hydroponic when it comes to the origins of his seeds. In other words: understatement par excellence. Neither does he have a recipe for the fruitful results of his creative gardening nor does he want to have one. We met Brendan in Berlin for a little chat about scientific approaches and his penchant for collecting insects.
