In today's digital, constantly evolving media landscape, the modes and mediums in which we communicate our ideas and concepts are radically changing. Whether you're a young designer promoting your ambitious visions, or a creative professional with a large budget to sell a product and business concept, we're all faced with the same basic challenge of translating abstract ideas into unusual visual concepts with limited materials and time.

Prem Krishnamurthy of Project Projects will guide a site-specific workshop at Gestalten, in which participants will be instructed to realize their visual concepts using only the materials available in the store. The consumable objects within the store will thus be converted back into materials for production and presentation. Participants should come prepared with a specific idea or concept they would like to communicate, and will visually develop their ideas by appropriating, montaging, and remixing in-store materials with the goal of strategically finding the most fitting and compelling medium(s) for the content. The workshop will culminate in a public event on the second day (June 12th), which the participants will organize, announce, produce, and use to present their resulting projects.

About This Workshop

The evolution of information stands at the intersection between the visualization and critical interpretation of data. With technology advancing at such rapid speed, and the way we consume and digest information constantly evolving, designers are challenged to embrace new editorial formats, platforms, and visual languages.

An emergence of visual journalists and graphic editors are tackling this task and reinventing news on paper through a new form of journalistic expression. They are creating a narrative language where the content and visuals coexist and work cohesively together to deliver a result that is digestible, informative, and enhances the overall quality of the story. Editorial designers are developing new journalistic styles and conveying their ideas through visual storytelling where texts, headlines, photographs, and infographics are not considered as standalone elements but developed together to create a visual story that allows readers to process and digest this knowledge in an informative and elegant way.

Infographics have become the key to changing culture and convention from the perspective of information consumption and IL—Intelligence in Lifestyle, the first magazine dedicated to cultural and social transformation in the 21st century, is one of the publications today that is pushing the envelope in the field of editorial design.

Over the two-day workshop, Francesco Franchi, a master of information design and the art director of IL, will give insight into how graphic editors filter information, establish relationships, discern patterns, and develop inspiring and stimulating solutions to contextualize information that simultaneously inspires, informs, entertains and even encourages critical thought.

Nacho Carbonell

 June 25 – 26, 10:00 – 19:00

Since Nacho Carbonell’s debut collection with his graduation project from the Design Academy Eindhoven, the renowned Spanish-born sculptor and product designer Nacho Carbonell has quickly earned his position as a strong force in contemporary limited edition design. His pieces and collections engage with the senses and have a highly recognizable style combining organic forms with rough, colorful finishing textures using everything from handcrafted recycled papers, corn seeds, broken glass and rusted metals to high tech materials.

He was nominated as Designer of the Year (2009) by the Design Museum London and received the Designer of the Future Award by DesignMiami (2009). His work is included in private collections and museums such as the Groningen Museum in the Netherlands and 21_21 Sight in Japan.

“I like to see objects as living organisms, imagining them coming alive and being able to surprise you with their behavior. I want to create objects with my hands, then I can give them my personality. I turn them into communicative objects that can arouse one’s sensations and imagination. In short, what I want to create are objects with a fictional or fantasy element that allow you to escape everyday life.” - Nacho Carbonell

About Gestalten Workshops

About Gestalten Workshops

Gestalten workshops 2011 trailer.

After years of speaking at festivals and hosting workshops at international universities and design institutions, we at Gestalten decided it was high time we develop our own series to offer even more insight into the world of visual culture—beyond our books—to benefit our design community.

This fall, we launched a new series of workshops at Gestalten Space, our new home in Berlin-Mitte.

Drawing from our international network of designers who are pushing contemporary creative expression to new frontiers, Gestalten put together an engaging program of workshops this 2011 with internationally-celebrated industry creatives Jan Schwochow from Germany’s leading infographics studio Golden Section Graphics, House Industries’ head letterer Ken Barber, and 3D illustrator Sarah Illenberger—designed to challenge, inspire, and fuel bold new ideas.

For students and young professionals looking to equip themselves with practical skills or experienced professionals interested in gaining new insight, our comprehensive workshops offer unique and intimate creative learning experiences.

Watch this space! We'll be returning in 2012 with a new line up of exciting workshops. See you again next year.
