Today’s designers are taking on more responsibility in modern city designs, which entails profound interdisciplinary knowledge starting with ergonomics, sanitation, family structures and living mobility and behaviours. There’s also an inherent trend of industrial products appearing increasingly similar using design to differentiate and the same can be said about cities, relying on designers to lend them a clear profile.

Synonymous to architecture and urban planning, design is essential for the future of our cities. But how do we define a “City of Design”? What shapes our urban infrastructure? And what role does shelter design and temporary architecture play?

Designcity explores global design and the urban environment and includes essays and propositions by acclaimed theorists such as Richard Florida, Brian Holmes, Saskia Sassen, John Thackara, Craig Buckley, Mike Davis, Hans Ibelings and Martin Pawley. This publication also features the projects showcased at the Designmai 2006 design festival in Berlin, presenting ideas and approaches by designers under the parallel theme of “Designcity”.
